Sgt. Jenkins Talks About The Disturbance Call

Sgt. Tom Jenkins of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigates a public disturbance. When the officer attempts to question a hostile male individual, he is forced to physically retrain the man when he does not comply with directives. The intoxicated man curses the officer during questioning and sobs openly when he’s arrested. Meanwhile, a victim/witness describes how the belligerent suspect verbally assaulted an Asian man and several other citizens without cause.

WRONG Priti, not the way I perceived this incident on COPS. I was taught in the police academy that a police officer CAN NOT be insulted so they take more than their share of verbal abuse from smart asses and cannot do anything, at first. If there is a crowd gathering and sees this activity going on the officer at that point has to order the individual to keep quiet or risk being arrested for 'disorderly conduct'. I don't remember the "perp" making racial slurs or comments to Sgt. Jenkins but could be wrong? I think this guy was just a wise ass playing games with the police and got bum rushed. His choice. He could have complied and this would never have happened.

Well when a cop says take your hands out of your pockets that's because it's been known for decades that people have attacked and killed cops with hidden objects. It's for safety. Anyone who watches TV or this show knows it's just procedure. Dude didn't want to listen. A simple direction and he couldn't follow it. well Robby, that would not be a 'wise move' to react that way. Police, like the general public are allowed to use enough force necessary to stop the action thus when some one stops resisting and complies the use of whatever force is being used, MUST STOP. Had Sgt. Jenkins gone beyond that especially while being filmed he would have had a law suit for police brutality. He did a professional job handling this incident and was more than fair and tolerant before he lowered the boom.

I saw this episode many times and I feel Sgt. Jenkins did a superb job handling this call. Most individuals when confronted by the police use a form of 'passive resistance' when the police make contact with them as some believe they have done nothing wrong so if they plead their case or resist the police somehow they will just go away and leave them alone. Not so, I went through a police academy and was taught when the police get called for assistance for an incident, in the end, we win. And we were taught the use of force and pain compliance. It starts when the police arrive. Officer presence is usually enough for the average person to desist their activity. If that doesn't work the officer uses verbal commands to gain control. When that doesn't work the the use of force choices are invoked such as pain compliance techniques with pressure point tactics. When an officer orders a "perp" to show their hands, a wise person complies. If the officer orders the "perp" to get on the ground, a wise person complies. If not, the "perp" will be forced to comply such as a body slam such as Sgt. Jenkins used. It isn't pretty but the individual determines how the officer responds. If you cooperate, don't lie, don't have any weapons, do what your told there is usually no problems dealing with police. Most cops are decent people and tolerant law enforcement professionals who are well trained plus they have more restraint requirements than the public in the performance of their job so they have to act accordingly. My advise is, OBEY THE LAW. Can't get any simpler or easier than that. If the police stop you, don't argue your defense on the scene, get an attorney and take it to court. You have that right. If you resist the police or fight back they are more than willing to give you your wish.
